Biographical or Historical Information

Philip Eldon Henderson served as president of Western College from 1945 to 1951. He was born on May 23, 1901 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He received an A.B. degree from the University of Colorado. In 1926, he received a M.B.A. degree at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts and also a doctorate degree in Business Administration. Dr. Henderson began his career as an instructor at Temple University in Philadelphia from 1926 to 1928. He became Head of the Commerce Department at the Junior College in New Haven, Connecticut from 1928 to 1929. He was Associate Secretary at the Taylor Society for Scientific Management from 1929 to 1931, and then became Comptroller at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts from 1931 to 1934. He also was a traveling auditor for the B. F. Goodrich Company from 1934 to 1935. From 1935 to 1936 he was Assistant Manager for the Cocoa and Chocolate Code Authority for the U. S. Government. He served with the Farm Security Administration from 1936 to 1941, as Finance Manager, Assistant Regional Director and Regional Director. Having been an Assistant to the President and Vice-President of Western in 1941, Philip Eldon Henderson was very familiar with the school. He was appointed President upon Thompson's resignation. During his term both Clawson Hall and the new science building (later named Boyd Hall) were built. He resigned in 1951. Henderson left Western College and served as the Head of the Department of Economics at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.
